INTRODUCTION
The K9 squad (Dog
Squad) was established vide G.O. Ms. No. 37 dt.
10.05.1983. This unit is functioning under the control of Inspector
of Police, Crime Records Bureau under the supervision of SP (CID) @
Director CRB. It was inaugurated on 12.06.1985 after the
successful completion of the K9 training period at Railway
Protection Force, New Delhi.
LOCATION:
A. PUDUCHERRY:
The K9 Squad at Puducherry is situated at Gorimedu, between Police Training School and Chief
Stores about 6 Kms from Police Head Quarter in West Direction.
The Unit functions in a Government- owned
building.
B. KARAIKAL: The
K9 Squad at Karaikal Functions from a Dog kennel at Keelaodudarai, Karaikal about 135
Kms from Puducherry and about 4 Kms from the Office of the SSP
(Karaikal).

INFRASTRUCTURE:
The
K9 Squad has ten kennels and two separate kennels for pups, enclosed
by a protective boundary. It has a Dedicated kitchen and bathing
facilities for the K9s and sample explosive substances used for K9s
Training Purposes.
BRIEF ON DOGS:
K9s are procured periodically to periodically to replace retired or
deceased dogs and to meet operational requirements. The K9 Squad in
the Puducherry Region initially functioned with a sanctioned
strength of two K9s Dogs until 1985. The Sanctioned strength was
increased to three K9s during the period from 1985 to 1993 and was
subsequently enhanced to five K9s from 1993 onwards. At present, the
Puducherry K9 squad maintains a strength of eight k9s.
