The Food Cell Unit in Puducherry and Karaikal was created on
5.11.1975 vide G.O. M.s.No.146/HEW/CS dated 5.11.1975. His
Excellency the Lt. Governor, of Puducherry had approved the
duties, responsibilities and function of Food Cell Vide
G.O.Ms.No.157/CS/HEW/CS dated 6.12.75. As per the G.O, the Food
Cell will function as a unit of the Civil Supplies Directorate
under the complete Administrative Control of the Director of
Civil Supplies and the Collector. Cum Secretary (Revenue & Civil
supplies), Puducherry.
One Food Cell Police Station consisting of 2 Sub-Inspectors of
Police,3 Head constables and 9 Police Constables will be located
at PUDUCHERRY, one sub-Inspector, one Head constable and 2
police constables at the out post at MADAGADIPET and One
Sub-Inspector, One head constable and 2 Police constables at the
other out post at BAHOUR and all these Food Cell Police stations
will function under the Supervision of Superintendent of police
Food Cell located at Puducherry. While the other wing i.e Food
Cell P.S. KARAIKAL consisting of One Inspector of Police, One
Head constable and 6 police constables will be located at
KARAIKAL under the over all control of the Superintendent of
Police, Food Cell, Puducherry. The Officer and men posted at
Karaikal will have their Head quarters at Karaikal itself. The
Directorate Civil supplies, Puducherry will have the overall
control of the whole cell for Administrative Purposes. The Food
Cell wing located at Karaikal headed by the Inspector of police
will have Jurisdiction over Karaikal and Mahe regions and the
Food Cell wing located at Puducherry will have Jurisdiction
over Puducherry and Yanam Regions.
The Superintendent of Police, Food Cell, is the Head of the
Office and he is the D.D.O. of Food Cell, Puducherry and
Karaikal. The Inspector of Police, Karaikal will be Disbursing
Officer in respect of Pay and Allowances.

P.S. Puducherry is presently located in a rented building at
No.63,Vth Cross, Jaya Nagar (West), Reddiarpalayam, Puducherry

FUNCTION OF FOOD
CELL
REGISTERING OF
CASE UNDER ESSENTIAL COMMODITIES ACT
Food Cell Police under the instructions of Superintendent of
Police,Food Cell conduct frequent raids/Inspection at border
areas of Puducherry. Any body found violating Essential
Commodities Act 1955 cases are registered against them.
ASSISTING THE
CIVIL SUPPLIES SQUARED
A squad is being maintained in civil supplies. Whenever the
squad conducts inspections, raids, checking’s of Fair Price
shops, Petrol Bumps, and Kerosene outlets etc., Food Cell Police
will associate and assist them. Whenever the squad goes for
enumeration of cards, vetting out of bogus cards or for other
duties, the Food Cell Police will assist the squad.
SPECIAL TASK
1. Food Cell Police performs bandhobust duties during
Deepavali, Pongal Bazars and during the Natural calamities like
cyclone and floods. The Food Cell police ensures proper Public
Distribution System. During bundh calls, called by lorry
owners/ drivers the Food Cell police ensures proper transport of
Essential commodities from one place to other places, by
performing escort duties.
2. In additions to the above, Food Cell Police perform station
Sentry duties, Station Writer, Court duty, Process duties,
guarding of government and case properties and escort duties.
