Historical perspective

Traffic Police Station (North), Puducherry had been fabricate and Temporarily functioning from 07.03.2016 at PAP Barracks, Gorimedu, Puducherry as per the Notification vide G.O. Ms No. 48, Dt. 28.07.15 of the Home Dept., Puducherry which is under supervision of Superintendent of Police Traffic (N-E), with a sanctioned strength of Inspector-1, Sub-Inspectors-2 Head Constables-2 and 33 Police Constables. At present the actual working strength of the Traffic PS (North), is Inspector-1, Sub- Inspectors-2 Head Constable-2 , 27 Constable and Short of.6 Constable.

Traffic Police Station ( North), Puducherry

Having Jurisdiction over the area coming under the following Police Station.

· Kalapet Police Station

· Lawspet Police Station

· D-Nagar Police Station

· Mettupalayam Police Station

· Reddiarpalayam Police Station.

2. The Traffic Police Station (North), Puducherry handles road accident cases and also violations punishable under M.V Act 1988 rules, Indian Penal Code, Police Act 1861 and Police (Puducherry Police) Amendment Act 1966. The sections of law dealt by the unit are as follows:

Fatal accident cases U/s 304- A IPC
Grievous hurt cases U/s 279, 338 IPC
Simple hurt cases U/s 279, 337 IPC
Rash and negligence driving cases U/s 279 IPC
Traffic obstruction cases U/s 283 IPC
All offences under M.V Act, 1988

TRAFFIC ZONES

In order to maintain effective traffic regulation in Traffic Police Station (North), Puducherry the area is divided into two Zones, each under the charge of a Sub-Inspector. The allocation of Traffic Zones among the Sub-Inspectors of Traffic PS will increase the efficiency of traffic regulation and enforcement of laws, rules and other orders issued by The Director General of Police from time to time.

ZONE –I

Zone I officer will cover the Mettupalayam PS limits and Reddiyarpalayam PS limits and also cover Kalapet PS limits bimonthly.

ZONE –II

Zone II officer will cover Lawspet PS limits and D’ Nagar PS limits and also cover Kalapet PS limits bimonthly.

Inspector of Police, Traffic Police Station (North), Puducherry will supervise the above zonal officers and ensure that they are very effective in their Zones.

The Zonal Officers with a strength of one 1 PC’s and 1 HG each are also performing as mobile squads for enforcement related duties and they move around the jurisdiction of Traffic Police Station (North), Puducherry to clears the encroachments on the roads and pavements and to book cases against irregular parking of vehicles, and to clear the vendors occupying the streets etc. The zonal officers are only provided with motor cycle.

Ø On 14.03.2016 the Auto drivers at Rajiv Gandhi Signal were called to Police Station and meeting was conducted. 32 Auto drivers are participating that the meeting and expressing their problem and also given instruction to them regarding to regulating the traffic and obey the traffic signal.

Ø On 17.03.2016 the Auto drivers at Indira Gandhi Signal were called to Police Station and meeting was conducted. 23 Auto drivers are participating that the meeting and expressing their problem and also given instruction to them regarding to regulating the traffic and obey the traffic signal.

Ø On 20.03.2016 the Tempo (Vikram) drivers of Mettupalayam and Gorimedu route and owner were called to Police Station and meeting was conducted. 35 Tempo (Vikram) drivers and owners were participating that the meeting and expressing their problem and also given instruction to them regarding to regulating the traffic and obey the traffic signal.

Ø On 22.03.2016 the driver and owner of the Blue metals at ECR road, were called to Police Station and meeting was conducted. 17 driver and owner of the Blue metals were participating that the meeting and expressing their problem and also given instruction to them regarding to regulating the traffic and obey the traffic signal

Ø On 11.08.2016 the Helmet rally was conducted by Police personnel of Traffic Police Station (North), Puducherry, in order to create awareness among the people

Ø On 15.10.2016 the owner of the Parcel service, Vellathanki Iyyanarkoil street, Mettupalayam, were called to Police Station and meeting was conducted. 10 driver and owner of the Parcel Service were participating that the meeting and expressing their problem and also given instruction to them regarding to regulating the traffic and obey the traffic signal.

Ø On 18.10.2016 the owner of the Lorry and drivers at Truck terminal road, were called to Police Station and meeting was conducted. 15 driver and owner of the lorry were participating that the meeting and expressing their problem and also given instruction to them regarding to regulating the traffic and obey the traffic signal

Ø Traffic awareness pamphlets were distributed to the public at signal points and the stickers were pasted in tempo and autos.

Ø On 12.03.2017 the owner of the Bus and drivers of Cuddalour-Puducherry, were called to Police Station and meeting was conducted. 25 driver and owner of the bus were participating that the meeting and expressing their problem and also given instruction to them regarding to regulating the traffic, obey the traffic signal and unboard the passenger at Indira Square, Puducherry.
