TOPOGRAPHY
Yanam is one of the four regions of Pondicherry Union territory
lying at a distance about 850 km. North East to
Pondicherry . It is situated within the East Godavari District
of Andhra Pradesh on the Northern Bank of the
Godavari
river. The Police Station is housed in a Government
building situated at Pillaraya street, which was inaugrated on
29-08-1983
The bordering Police Station are 1) Coringa PS of Andhra Pradesh
on the East 2) Draksharama PS of Andhra Pradesh on the west and
3) Muramalla PS of Andhra Pradesh on the South
Historical
Prospective of Yanam Region
The
name of the region is derived from the regional headquarters..
it is stiuated on the East Coast of the Indian Peninsula between
16 42' and 16 46' Northern Latitude and between 82 11' and 82
19' Eastern Longitude bouded on all sides by the east Godavari
District of Andhra Pradesh. The town of Yanam lies on the spot
where the River Coringa (Atreya) branches off from Gawthami
Godavari. The River Coringa (Atreya) divides Yanam Region into
two parts. The region, which covers an area of 20.00 Sq.KM, has
a population of 24000 according to the 1991 census. The region
is bounded on the East and South by River Gawthami Godavari,
which discharges itself into Bay of Bengal after flowing almost
14 Kms. towards South- East from Yanam.
HISTORY
A
PARWANA from Haji Hassan Khan authorized the French
Representative Bouquet, then Chef of the company at
Machilipatnam to set up a "Loge' at Yanam in the year 1731.
The Sovereignty of the French over the territory was confirmed
by Musafar jung. the Nizam of Hyderabd in 1750. The place was
formly ceded to them only two years late. link all other
settlements. Yanam too fell thrice into the hands of the
British. After the Napoleonic wars, Yanam along with the factory
at Machilipatnam was finally returned to the French early in
1817.
The
loge at Machilipatnem which was not more than a market center continued
under the French with a semblance of sovereignty till 6th
October 1947 when they relinquished their over the same.
APPROACH
There
is no railway line in Yanam Region., The nearest Raelway station
is at Kakinada (head quarters of East Godavari District), which
is 26 km, away on the east. it is an important trader centre and
post town and there is a District Road connecting Yanam. It is
also linked by another district road on the west
Ramachandirapuram and Rajahmundry. To reach Yanam by Railway we
have to get down either at samalkot Junction (38km. from Yanam)
or at Kakinada Town (26 km from Yanam)

FAIRS AND FESTIVALS
A weekly fair is being held on every Tuesday at Panchala Street,
Yanam. People from neighboring villages of Andhra Pradesh and
villages of Yanam visits the fair where grocery, vegetables,
fruits, clothes and other consumer items are to be sold.
